After the segway driving test, it will begin the itinerary to the center of Cefalù.

You will be able to admire the splendid buildings of Via Ruggero, including Osterio Magno, a historic fortified palace.

We will visit the Church of Purgatory and we will reach the Duomo, Romanesque monument with Byzantine traces built by Ruggero II, who escaped from a storm and landed on the beaches of the town. The interior is embellished with beautiful Byzantine mosaics.

We will reach the Church of Istria and have a splendid view from the Bastion of Cape Macchiafava.

The next destinations will be Ancient Port, Fisherman’s Gate and Mandralisca Museum. You will visit the characteristic Medieval washroom, which is still intact.

You will reach the beach of Cefalù through a pleasant pedestrian street leading to the seafront. By going along the bathing establishments you will come to the meeting point.

After a brief orientation about the use of a Segway PT, which will take place in the parking lot in via Galatea 234 -GPS 37°36’51.9″N 15°10’08.3″E, the tour will begin.

The first destination to be reached will be the Villa Comunale of Acireale, named after Vittorio Emanuele III, King of Italy, also called villa Belvedere. You will enjoy a splendid panorama that reaches Taormina, Etna and Timpa (the protected area close to the sea).

We will cross Piazza Garibaldi, where the architectural signs of the fascist twenty years left a trace.

You will be able to admire, later, the baroque architectures that characterize the ancient city.

In particular, we will visit both the Cathedral of Maria Santissima Annunziata and the Basilica of SS. Pietro and Paolo, superb examples of Sicilian Baroque.

A must stop is in front of the Town Hall, also full of Baroque friezes.

Then we will reach the Church of San Domenico, an equally clear Baroque work.

The Collegiate Basilica of San Sebastiano, characterized by its highly decorated facade and the Church of Sant’Antonio di Padova can be easily reached by continuing the route.

We meet on the terrace above the parking “Porta Catania” -GPS 37°51’02.8″N 15°16’48.4″E– and from here starts our visit. Here we can learn how to use our electric vehicle and then enter the city through the arch of Porta Catania. We reach Piazza Duomo where there are the fountain with the “Centauressa” -symbol of Taormina- and the City Hall.

We continue towards the ancient monastery of San Domenico, now one of the most luxurious hotels of Sicily.

We take the Roma street to cross the Villa Comunale.

Leaving the public garden we will head towards the Naumachie and, subsequently, towards the Belvedere in via Pirandello, where we will enjoy a splendid view of Isola Bella.

We will then reach Porta Messina and, later, the most famous monument of the city, the Greek-Roman Theatre. Once we leave the Theatre we take Via Teatro Greco and Corso Umberto towards Porta Catania.

We will stop to admire Palazzo Corvaja, the church of Santa Caterina d’Alessandria and the Odeon.

Before passing the Porta di Mezzo, we will arrive in Piazza IX Aprile, known as Belvedere.

In the small island of Ortigia, the ancient Greeks created the first nucleus of what in a few decades became one of the most powerful cities in the Mediterranean area. Going in the Segway PT we will discover the most significant archaeological rests and monuments of the different periods.

The tour starts from the bus parking next to the port -GPS 37°03’51.4″N 15°17’11.1″E-, entrance from Via Rodi, where we will learn how to use our small vehicle.

We will move to the island of Ortigia reaching Porta Marina and the ancient Spanish fortifications.

We will see the rests of the Greek walls built by Dionysius the Great and, not far away from the bridge, the Apollo temple which is located in Piazza Pancali.

Along Corso Matteotti we reach Piazza Archimede where we can see the beautiful fountain which represents the goddess Artemis and the nymph Arethusa. Via Roma leads us near the Cathedral along which we will see the Greek columns that make up the backbone of the church.

From Via Minerva we reach Piazza Duomo where we find the Archbishop’s Palace, the eighteenth-century Palazzo Benevento del Bosco and the Town Hall. From here we drive to the Arethusa Spring, with its papyrus plants, and continue, following the port, up to the Castle Maniace.

The tour of the island will be complete driving along the Lungomare di Levante to the Post Office Square and then crossing the Bridge Umberto. We continue along Corso Gelone and reach (in case of extra tour) the sanctuary to Our Lady of Tears. Nearby there are the Regional Archaeological Museum and the Catacombs of San Giovanni.

Not far away from here there is the archaeological park called Neapolis, where we can see the Greek theatre, the ear of Dionysius and Roman amphitheatre.

In via Francesco Crispi, 230, in front to President Hotel -GPS 38°07’43.0″N 13°21’40.8″E-, we’ll learn to use the Segway PT and then begin our tour, passing the Teatro Politeama-Garibaldi and covering the Ruggero Settimo street, we reach the Verdi Square, dominated by the Teatro Massimo, the largest opera house of Italy.

Once crossed the Arab flavoured Capo market, going on to Beati Paoli Square and Settangeli Square, we reach the Cathedral. From there we continue to the nearby Piazza della Vittoria, which is overlooked by the Norman Palace and the Bishop’s Palace and where, in the contiguous Villa Bonanno, traces of the Roman city are preserved.

Through via dei Biscottari we reach Bologni Square, where stand the Palaces Villafranca and Belmonte-Riso, together with the monument after Charles V. G. D’Alessi street leads to Bellini Square with the churches S. Cataldo and St. Mary’s of the Admiral also called Martorana, both in Arab-norman style. Then passing by the alley S. Caterina we arrive at the Town Hall Square with the Pretoria fountain and a view to the church S. Giuseppe dei Teatini and the Four Corners of the city.

Along the Discesa dei Giudici and crossing via Roma we reach S. Anna Square with the homonymous church and former convent of

  1. Anna that now houses the Gallery of Modern Art. Continuing on the square Croce dei Vespri, overlooking the Gangi Palace, and then on Aragona Square, we reach the church S. Francesco d’Assisi; close to it there is the oratory of S. Lorenzo decorated by Giacomo Serpotta.

With Merlo street we reach Mirto Palace and from there to the nearby Marina Square with the Garibaldi Garden and the Steri-Chiaramonte Palace.

Here begins the ancient port of Palermo said the Cala, you pass the church S. Giorgio dei Genovesi, XIII Vittime Square and the area of Castellammare. Continuing onto via Francesco Crispi.

Messine, entirely rebuilt after the terrible earthquake that destroyed it in 1908, appears as a modern city, thanks to its boulevards that draw a regular urban planning. But the visitor who is aware of any detail will discover the history of the city aboard his Segway PT.

Starting from Via Castellammare -GPS 38°11’29.2″N 15°33’22.3″E-, near Via Garibaldi, next to the Catalani Church, we will go to Piazza Cairoli –commercial centre of the town- and from here we will reach Piazza Pugliatti where there are the Court of Justice and the University. After that we will go to Piazza Duomo to admire the fountain of Orion and the Cathedral with its bell tower, famous for its astronomical clock unveiled in 1933 when the reconstruction of the Christian temple was finished. We will reach the church S.S. Annunziata dei Catalani passing in front of the baroque fountains. Close to this church, in Via Lepanto, we will see the monument to Don Juan of Austria and then we will proceed to Piazza Antonello closed by neoclassical palaces.

We will reach the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele III, where -today- night dining is the master, we will see Piazza Antonello, bordered by neoclassical buildings.

We will then go to the panoramic point in front of the Church of Montalto.

On the way that goes to the medieval church San Francesco d’Assisi we will admire the baroque palace Monte di Pietà. After that we will get into the public gardens and we will reach Piazza Unità d’Italia where there are the Palace of the

Government and the fountain of Neptune by Montorsoli. From here we will move back to Piazza Municipio paying attention to the statue of Ferdinand de Bourbon and the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele II.

We will reach the church S.S. Annunziata dei Catalani passing in front of the baroque fountains. Close to this church, in Via Lepanto, we will see the monument to Don Juan of Austria.

The curious visitor can see in Catania traces of the imperial Roman age, a medieval castle and many palaces with enchanting late-baroque facades.

With the Guided Tour on the Segway PT you will be able to visit the entire old town in half a day.

We will start from Piazza Alcalà (in the center of Catania), near Villa Pacini (at the entrance to the “Borsellino” parking lot) -GPS 37°30’06.0″N 15°05’19.6″E– a green area in front of the harbour, where we will learn together how to use our Segway PT.

From here we will reach Piazza Duomo. This is the heart of the town where there are Catania’s symbol, an elephant in lava stone and the city hall.

Taking via Etnea we will cross Piazza Università. From here we go to Piazza Vincenzo Bellini where there is the wonderful lyrical theatre named after Vincenzo Bellini.

Going along Via Etnea, we will reach Piazza Stesicoro, where we will see the ruins of the Roman amphitheatre and the monument to Vincenzo Bellini, Catania’s swan.

Having covered another piece of Via Etnea, vibrant street with commercial activities and meeting places, we will cross the green area of the public garden, well known as “Villa Bellini”, so we will reach the high part of the town where we will admire in Piazza Dante the church San Nicola and the Benedictine’s Monastery.

We will arrive at the Roman Theater of Catania whose current appearance dates back to the second century and has been brought to light since the end of the nineteenth century. To the east it borders a minor theater, called Odeon.

After that we will penetrate into the baroque town, crossing Via Crociferi, chosen by different film makers to be the set of many movies (“Storia di una capinera – Sparrow” by Franco Zeffirelli adapted from the homonymous novel by Giovanni Verga, and “I Vicerè – The viceroys” by Roberto Faenza itself drawn from the novel by Federico De Roberto) to arrive, after passing under the arch San Benedetto, to piazza San Francesco and then to Piazza Federico di Svevia, where we will find out the castle Ursino built in the XIII century, today the only evidence still visible of the medieval town.
